Saturday Afternoon

I went to Dumbarton Oaks this past weekend to see what was in bloom and take my annual Spring photographs and, of course, sketch.  While I was setting up a shot of a magnificent Oak, I noticed a lovely elderly couple enjoying the Spring day by reading in the middle of this immense garden.  I could have drawn their interaction in the lovely gardens, but what really interested me was the charm in what they had brought with them.  They clearly had just finished either writing some letters to loved ones or doing their bills.  Three stamped letters were propped up against the side of the man and, aside from the books they were reading, of which I will never know, they had also brought a paper bag lunch, which was carefully placed on the bench. These two were doing the same mundane things I do on Saturdays (although indoors) and had brought the joy of open air, sunshine and the surrounding beautiful gardens into their every day.  The charm of that still resonates.

What you see is the drawing for new black and white, block style work.  I have been meaning to do a series.  This will be #2 of that series. A finished example of my block style is below.
